The Thurston Academic Institute is a school embedded inside of a traditional four year high school that offers Institute students all of the benefits, programs and opportunities that any student could want. Thurston High School is in the South Redford District, a small and innovative district well-known for academic excellence for all students. Thurston offers students a safe and secure environment without the feeling of an armed camp. There is a uniformed police officer stationed in the building as well as between three and six adult hall monitors throughout the day. The building is currently completing a $22 million remodeling which includes the addition of a digital communications wing, a new gymnasium and a 700-seat theater. There is a complete offering of co-curricular activities, one of the top instrumental music programs in the state an extensive athletic program, professional academic counseling, and the most up-to-date technology available.

TAI students will have access to all of the support systems and all of the academic help and strategies, as well as all of the understanding and nurturing that aid any Thurston student through four years of high school. A TAI student must be willing to accept the level of academic challenge that comes with a rigorous course of study. A student who struggles academically will have probationary periods during which she/he can show improvement. Failure to improve could lead to reassessment of participation in the Institute. All students will be required to operate under the Student Code of Conduct.

If a TAI student qualifies in every respect, she/he will be eligible to dual enroll at a local college or university.
